Costs Without Insurance

Uninsured patients often pay more — but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Why Uninsured Patients Pay More

Insured patients benefit from negotiated rates between insurers and hospitals — rates that are typically 40-60% below the list price. Without insurance, you may be billed at the full chargemaster rate, which can be 2-3x what insured patients pay.

Example: ER Visit

Hospital list price

$4,800

Insured patient pays

$1,200

Cash-pay rate (if you ask)

$1,800

How to Pay Less Without Insurance

Always ask for the cash-pay rate — it's often 40-60% less than the list price

Ask about financial assistance programs — nonprofit hospitals are required to offer them under the ACA

Negotiate before the procedure if possible — agree on a price in writing

Request a Good Faith Estimate — the No Surprises Act requires it for scheduled care

Payment plans are always available — ask before services, not after

Consider standalone imaging centers and clinics, which charge a fraction of hospital rates
